The Society of Christian Doctrine started its activity in Zurrieq on the 5th of May 1926. The pioneer for this opening was Michelangelo Bugeja, having obtained permission from Giovanni Battista Ghigo, the Archpriest of Zurrieq at the time. Michelangelo Bugeja became a member of the Society after having met Dun Gorg at the Cospicua branch. He used to attend the regular meetings held there by the Society after he finished his work at the Dockyard. He passed his weekends at Zurrieq and it was this that motivated him to open a centre for the Society at Zurrieq. The first meeting place was his own house, until another one was found. As the number of children increased, Bugeja’s house became too small and in 1928 another house was rented; 85, Regina Street, at ₤4 per annum. For some reason or another, three years later they moved into new premises, 112, St. Bartholomew Street, this time paying ₤6 for its rental. However, even these premises became too small for the ever growing activity and after a lot of prayers and useful work from Superior Bugeja, in 1938, the present premises were rented.

During the Second World War, for more than seven years, the SDC centre in Zurrieq served as a refuge for evacuees coming from Cottonera. Bugeja, being old, weak and sick, retired in his home and never went out again. For 18 years he had worked hard for the highest glory of God and for the good of others. Superior Cikku Cauci became the next Superior and was then replaced by Superior Karmenu Tabone who used to come everyday from Floriana. Superior Tabone was assigned another activity within the Society and could not continue to give his service at Zurrieq. Cikku Mallia, a close friend of Bugeja, was chosen as Superior. After some time Mallia was then succeeded by Baskal Cachia. Superior Kalang Bugeja died on the 25th of March 1946, feast of the Annunciation, comforted by his colleagues in the Society and relatives.

In 1986, Joseph Sammut was succeeded by Raymond D’Amato who served as Superior for 9 years. Edward Garnisi was the next superior after D’Amato for a 5 year term, succeeded by Joseph Bonnici, who was then succeeded by the present superior Anton Grima. About 350 children currently attend the Museum centre in Zurrieq, ranging from 5 year old children to 16 year-old teens. The activities are held everyday from 5:00 pm till 8:00 pm except on Wednesdays.
